Message from the Headteacher, Mr Richards

This week, our Key Stage 5 exams have begun and year 9 end of year option assessments have also started. Our year 7s have been on a trip to the Winton Gallery at the Science Museum and the year 12 Brilliant Club Scholars visited the University of Southampton on Tuesday as part of a programme to build skills, knowledge and confidence to apply to the most competitive universities – you can read more about it below. In school, our visitors from the Heritage School, Kolkata departed safely on Wednesday and we had presentations and a graduation ceremony for the year 12 students involved in the Urban Hack project. Year 9s had a rewards movie night and a number of year 8s and 9s competed in the regional final of the Translation Bee against schools across London. A very busy week indeed.

Our final Ofsted report has been published on the Ofsted website: https://reports.ofsted.gov.uk/provider/23/101928 Some of the highlights included:

“Villiers High School is an inclusive community supporting everyone to fulfil their potential.”
“Teachers ensure that pupils receive high-quality experiences.”
“The school ensures that there is a focus on both academic and personal development.”
“Pupils behave very well, thrive in learning and attend school regularly.”
“Pupils learn about the importance of being included and treating all fairly and equally, irrespective of their faiths, cultures and beliefs.”
“Pupils exhibit confidence, they learn to work independently and be an effective team member.”
“The school has an ambitious curriculum…”
“Teachers use strong subject knowledge and effective communication to promote learning and address misconceptions…”
“The school ensures that pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities achieve very well.”
“Pupils show high levels of concentration and determination to succeed in lessons.”
“Students in the sixth form are responsible and demonstrate exceptional levels of maturity.”
“[Pupils] understand how to keep themselves healthy, both physically and mentally.”
“Pupils participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities, noticeably in sports, the arts and subject-specific clubs.””The school has taken action to reduce staff workload, for example by carefully organising the school calendar.”

We are glad that the inspectorate has acknowledged so much of the hard work and wonderful opportunities. We will not rest on our laurels, however, and will continue to work on our vision to become a world class, inclusive school, at the beating heart of the community.

Year 7 Maths Trip to the Winton Gallery

Our Year 7 mathematicians went to the Winton Gallery among many other exhibitions in the Science Museum.  They explored the fundamental role that mathematicians, their tools and ideas have played in building the world we live in today. Students were exposed to the mathematics of navigation, using maths to predict floods, how the economy works, aviation and the invention of computers.

Sixth Form – ‘The Scholars Programme’

Students in year 12 completed ‘The Scholars Programme’ with the Brilliant Club. They worked closely with a PhD tutor to study a ‘super-curricular’ course, exploring a topic they may not usually study in the school curriculum. Students attended a series of university style tutorials preparing them to work towards a final assignment that challenged them to work above their current level. Students attended their spring graduation event at Southampton University and had the opportunity to celebrate their achievements.

A special congratulations to Valeta on her final assignment. She made such a strong impression on the PhD tutor and programme organisers that they are now exploring the possibility of publishing her work. This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to her dedication and talent. Well done, Valeta!
